In Our Eyes

<In our eyes>를 만들며, 여러 사람들의 눈을 만났다. 내가 평생 봐 온 눈부터 난생 처음 본 눈까지. 가지각색의 눈빛들을 만났다. 눈을 마주치는 일이란 정말 쉬운 일이겠지만, 그 눈을 깊이 들여다보는 일이 된다면, 과연 얼마나 자주 편안함을 느낄 수 있을까?
하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 들여다보려는 시도에 대해서 생각한다.
나는 ”그럼에도 불구하고“라는 말을 좋아한다. 내 앞에 어떤 장애물이 있더라도 내 가슴이 가르키는 곳으로 가겠다는 선언. 내가 여기 온전하다는 것. 변하지 않을 것이고 떠나지 않을 것이고 여기에 이렇게 함께 하겠다는 의지. 어떤 역경이 닥쳐와도 한번 가보자는 것.
그래서 늘 나를 울리는 사랑에도 불구하고 나는 늘 사랑을 한다.
예서와 나는 카메라를 사이에 두고 사람들에게 사랑을 물었다. 그리고 사랑에 대해 말하는 그들의 눈을 찍었다. 갑작스럽게 얘기하게 되기도, 미리 고민한 답을 공유하기도 하면서, 눈들은 사랑이란 장에 빛줄기를 비춘다. 어쩌면 그 빛들이 모여서 각자의 눈 속에 살고 있는 우리가 그 집의 문을 열고 나와 서로를 만날 수 있는 걸지도 모른다.
그런 생각을 하며 더 많은 눈들이 열려있고자 했으면 좋겠다는 작은 바램을 이 프로젝트에 담았다.
While creating In Our Eyes, I encountered many different eyes. Some I’ve known all my life, and others I was seeing for the very first time. Each pair carried its own unique light. Making eye contact may be a simple act—but when we try to truly look into someone’s eyes, how often can we say we feel at ease?
And yet, I think about the attempt itself—to look in, despite it all.
I like the phrase “despite it all.” It’s a declaration that no matter what obstacles lie ahead, I will follow where my heart points. That I am whole. That I won’t change, I won’t leave, and I’ll stay right here with you. That no matter the hardship, I’m willing to try.
So even when love brings me to tears, I choose to love—despite it all.
Together, Yeaseo and I asked people about love, with a camera between us. We captured their eyes as they spoke—some shared their thoughts on the spot, others had prepared them beforehand. In those moments, their eyes shed light on the subject of love. Perhaps, those beams of light gathering together could help us—who live inside each other's eyes—step out of our little homes and truly meet.
With that thought, we created this project with a small hope:
that more eyes will remain open.
