My works revolve around the notion of flow and the emotional appeal of the color blue. I visually communicate human emotions and sentiments that are often omitted and lost in the language of words through the medium of moving images. Spending my teenage years in Australia, where I realized the impossibility of perfect translations, especially in between my native language Korean, and the newly acquired language, English. This experience laid a critical influence on early development in my artistic practice, as I fulfilled the disappointment in limitations of verbal communication by growing my unique eyes to observe the surroundings and express my feelings through art. It all started with excitement for every movement in the world, such as light, shadows, numerous things that cause the movement of water, or the wind seen through a shaking leaf. In a gradual or rapid world of constancy, I feel the energy of life that breeds. For me, creating videos is connected to the act of collecting, while focusing on capturing those moments when my unconsciousness connects with beautiful things that open up before our eyes.
In particular, I focus on gaps that exist in between going from one scene on to the next. The infinite space of in-between-ness is everywhere, such as the silence just before a song ends and moves on to the next song. I want my work to touch the unconscious emotions and feelings of the individuals, that is breathing in between those gaps, that one has not yet spoken, or did not know the ways to describe.
I have been adopting and developing a technique of ‘Photo-Motion’ to explore the intersection of the motion image of videos and the imagery of photography. I feel my imagination and curiosity grow in this “infinite gap,” as all possibilities are open in the inner world of ours.
Therefore, through this method of emphasizing each frame that goes into the motion created, I use the following as a tool to break the shell of personal and internal moments, emotions, and feelings: the gap, silence, and instability that exist in between those carefully selected still images.
